Over a 7-year period, (1996-2002), God placed within Tom Lowder a growing desire to begin a new congregation to serve the large foreign community living north of Beijing. The two largest international schools are located in this area. Tom previously served as an elder and Bible teacher at the Beijing International Christian Fellowship. The BICF publicly endorsed, blessed and prayed for the new work as it was getting started in the early spring of 2003.
On Sunday evening March 2, 2003, the Lowder family (Tom, Iris, Lewis & Logan) initiated a meeting attended by several new friends and families living in Shunyi. Several who came began gathering every Sunday evening to get better acquainted, share ideas and pray together.
The congregation first met on a Sunday morning on May 4, 2003 and
attracted about 20 adults and 10 children. The group continued meeting
each Sunday at one of several homes in the neighborhood. As a result of
rapid growth, the congregation has moved to several venues in the past
5 yrs. and currently meets in the Beijing Arts Exhibition Center. (Please see our map for directions.)
About 100 families are now part of Capital Community.
